Sunday’s a rugby day too!

without comments

This past Sunday I made it out to the MARFU skills session with Peter Bagetta on the Georgetown turf. It was a beautiful day at the session started at the perfect hour of 10:00 am.  Unfortunately, the field is a bit hard to find if you’ve never been there and so I spent some time wandering around the Georgetown University Hospital and carrying my bike up and downstairs before I found it.

There was about 15 or 20 ladies out - shout out to Megan and Kellie Cav for representing the Stingers!  Also to Pink and Patch who will be honorary Stingers for our Mardi Gras tournement coming up in less than 2 weeks!   We worked on a lot of simple passing drills to get back into the rugby frame of mind and focus on good passing.  Then we split into two teams and worked on passing, creating space, and switching from offense to defense on a short and wide field.  It was my first experience out at a MARFU event and it was great to be surrounded by so many talented and friendly rugby ladies from all the teams in our region.

Saturday’s a Rugby Day, even in the winter

with one comment

Today I went out the the Saturday rugby skills session from 2pm to 4pm at Balance Gym located northwest of Dupont Circle.  It was my first time out and I have to say it kicked my butt…. in a good way though.

There were about 15 women and 15 men out at the rugby skills session today.  The session was well organized and was a great challenge for everyone there.  The first hour or so we spend in an indoor basketball court working on running and passing.  The they split the group into men and women, and the men went into the weight room while we worked on some rugby drills.  Then after 20 minutes or so we switched. By the time it was over, I think everyone felt they’d gotten their $5 worth.  It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon and spend time with some rugby folks.  Great job to Megan, Heather, and Maria who were there too!

Getting ready for Mardi Gras

without comments

This year for our spring travel tournament, we’re headed down to New Orleans for the 29th Annual Mardi Gras tournament, February 21-22.  I’ve never been to New Orleans so I’m excited to go there, play some rugby, and be there during Mardi Gras! Last year we went to Nash Bash in Nashville and had so much fun that we’re still telling re-telling the stories from the weekend.

Looking forward to seeing you ladies at our Mardi Gras practices starting up soon.

New Website & New Season

with one comment

We’re about to roll out the new edition of the Maryland Stingers website for the Spring Session and I am excited for everyone to see it.  Deanna has been working hard on it all fall and winter long and it’s really turning out great.  Thanks so much Deanna making an awesome website and for all you do for this team!

We hope to open up this blog to multiple bloggers so that you get a feel for the great community that is women’s rugby in the DC area.  I’m excited about the session starting and I’ll be posting some information about all the ways we are getting ready. Speaking of, today there is a 2 hour rugby skills session at Balance Gym off Connecticut northwest of the Dupont Circle area.  I’ll be headed there at 2pm and I hope to post some information about how it goes.

Saturday’s a rugby day! Happy winter fitness to all!
